Moving to a different diet or lifestyle can be daunting for most people. While it may appear simple, making a lasting change requires careful consideration of various factors. In this post, we will talk about 5 easy steps you should take to go plant-based for beginners.

When my partner and I decided to adopt a plant-based lifestyle, we found the shift to be relatively swift, but we were comfortable with not being perfect. If you’re like us and just want to get started, here is a great place to start.

Start Slowly

Don’t try to change everything at once. Start by incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet. Try a meatless Monday or replace one meal a day with a plant-based option.

Why is this important? Starting slow will help lessen any overwhelm while allowing you to find small daily or weekly wins.  When life takes over, our diet is often one of the first things to slide.  By starting slowly you will find that you can avoid the ‘all or nothing’ experience but rather celebrate small wins and find what works best for you.

Educate Yourself

Learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet and the nutrients you need to be healthy. Make sure you’re getting enough protein, iron, calcium, and other important vitamins and minerals.

Why is this important: Understanding why you want to go plant-based and how you can live this way is so important if you want this to be a long-lasting change.  You don’t need to be knowledgeable in everything or hold a degree in nutrition, but by educating yourself on different vitamins, where you should supplement, protein sources, and more, you are setting yourself up for success!

Experiment with New Foods

There are so many delicious plant-based foods out there to try! Many cultures even lean heavily towards plant-based diets. By opening your mind to new foods, you may find that the options are limitless!

Why this is important: Joining a plant-based community can provide you with numerous benefits that can help you on your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. From extra motivation or recipe ideas to emotional support when things get tough and you want to give up, having people who have gone through it or are going through it can make the process feel less strenuous.

Be Kind to Yourself

Remember that making a dietary change can be challenging, so don’t beat yourself up if you slip up or have a hard time sticking to your goals. Celebrate your successes and keep moving forward!

Why is the important: Your life, your mental health, and your well-being are more important than all other things Nobody will ever be perfect despite what you may see on social media. Be kind to yourself, celebrate your successes, and remember that every choice and every meal you have that is plant-focused is one moving you towards the goal you desire. You can do it!
